Kettlebell Row

Elbow to the back pocket, hips square. The kettlebell row pulls the bell to the hip with the elbow close to the body, and the offset handle makes the grip work harder than a dumbbell does. Rotating the torso to lift more weight is the fault. With one bell and no bench it covers back work and anti-rotation in the same set.

Worked muscles are highlighted. The loop runs the kettlebell row from start to finish.

Setup

  1. Hinge over with one hand braced, bell in the other, arm hanging.
  2. Flat back, hips square.

How To Do It

  1. Row the bell to the hip, elbow tracking close to the body.
  2. Squeeze the shoulder blade at the top.
  3. Lower to a full stretch.

Breathing

Exhale on the row.

Common Mistakes

  • Rotating the torso to lift more weight.
  • Shrugging instead of rowing.
Coach Sam's cue: Elbow to the back pocket, hips square.

Programming It

Three sets of 8-12 per side.

Why This Exercise Works

The offset load and the single-arm position mean the trunk has to resist rotation while the back does the rowing. That is more useful than it sounds. Most rowing in life happens on one side at a time.

Where You Should Feel It

Lats and mid-back on the working side, with the trunk resisting rotation. More useful than it sounds, since most real-world pulling happens one side at a time.

Where It Fits in a Program

Same row, and the offset handle makes the grip work harder than a dumbbell does. It deserves the first slot and the longest rest periods you are willing to take.

Progressing and Regressing It

To progress the kettlebell row: move up a bell, or pause at the top of each rep. To regress it: support the free hand on a bench and reduce the load.

Who It's For

Anyone with one bell and no bench. A good back exercise that also trains anti-rotation without a separate exercise.

Equipment and Substitutions

As written here it uses a kettlebell. A dumbbell substitutes for the pressing and rowing. The offset load is only essential once the bell starts moving fast.

Common Questions

What muscles does the kettlebell row work?

The kettlebell row primarily trains the back, lats, biceps.

How many sets and reps should I do?

Three sets of 8-12 per side.

What are the most common kettlebell row mistakes?

Most often: rotating the torso to lift more weight; shrugging instead of rowing.

Do I need a kettlebell to do this?

This version uses a kettlebell, and it trains the back, lats, biceps. No bell? Use a dumbbell for the grinds. For anything that swings, pick a different exercise from the list rather than improvising.

Is this safe if I have an existing injury?

The kettlebell row puts the shoulder and elbow under load through a range many people have lost, so a cranky shoulder usually objects here before anything else does. Pain that pinches at a specific point is worth assessing; ordinary training discomfort is not. Not medical advice.
