Svend Press

Crush the plates together. The Svend press squeezes two plates together and presses them straight forward, which loads the chest through adduction without loading the joints. Letting the plates separate is the fault, because the squeeze is the exercise. It builds very little on its own and finishes a chest session well when there is nothing else around.

Animated form guide for the svend press: a two-pose loop with the chest highlighted
Worked muscles are highlighted. The loop runs the svend press from start to finish.

Setup

  1. Stand tall, press two plates together between the palms at the chest.
  2. Elbows up, squeezing hard.

How To Do It

  1. Press the plates straight forward while squeezing them together.
  2. Extend until the arms are straight.
  3. Return to the chest, never letting the squeeze relax.

Breathing

Exhale as you press out.

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the plates separate. The squeeze IS the exercise.
  • Going heavy. This is a contraction drill.
Coach Sam's cue: Crush the plates together the whole time.

Programming It

Two to three sets of 12-20 with a constant squeeze.

Why This Exercise Works

Pressing two plates together in front of the chest keeps the pecs contracted throughout, because the squeeze itself is the load. Almost no weight is moved and the chest still burns, which is why it works as a finisher and not as a builder.

Where You Should Feel It

The chest squeezing hard against the plates, with almost no weight being moved at all. The squeeze is the load.

Where It Fits in a Program

Pure adduction work, where squeezing plates together loads the chest without loading the joints. Everything else in the session should be arranged around this one.

Progressing and Regressing It

To progress the svend press: add a plate, or hold the extended position for five seconds. To regress it: use one plate, or a lighter pair.

Who It's For

Anyone finishing a chest session, or anyone with no equipment beyond a couple of plates. It builds very little and burns a lot.

Equipment and Substitutions

This version uses weight plates. If that is unavailable, pick another exercise training the same muscles from the list below. The pattern matters more than the implement.

Common Questions

What muscles does the svend press work?

The svend press primarily trains the chest.

How many sets and reps should I do?

Two to three sets of 12-20 with a constant squeeze.

What are the most common svend press mistakes?

Most often: letting the plates separate; going heavy.

Do I need weight plates to do this?

This version uses weight plates, and it trains the chest. No access to it? Any movement below that trains the same muscles in the same direction will do the job.

Is this safe if I have an existing injury?

The svend press puts the shoulder and elbow under load through a range many people have lost, so a cranky shoulder usually objects here before anything else does. Pain that pinches at a specific point is worth assessing; ordinary training discomfort is not. Not medical advice.
