What keto does well, what it doesn't do, and who should probably skip it.
Carbohydrates restricted low enough — usually under 50g and often under 30g daily — that the body shifts to producing ketones for fuel. That's the entire mechanism. Everything else claimed for it follows from very low carbohydrate intake and, usually, a large drop in total calories.
Appetite suppression is real for many people, and it's the main reason keto produces fast early results. Removing an entire macronutrient category also removes most convenience food and most snacking by default. For people with type 2 diabetes or insulin resistance, carbohydrate restriction can meaningfully improve blood sugar markers — that's a conversation to have with a physician, not a blog.
It doesn't burn fat faster than an equivalent-calorie diet when protein is matched. The dramatic first-week drop is largely glycogen and the water bound to it — typically several pounds that return the moment carbohydrates do. It is not required for fat loss, and no research shows a metabolic advantage once calories are controlled.
High-intensity lifting runs on glycogen. Many people find their strength and work capacity drop on very low carbohydrate intake, particularly in higher rep ranges. Some adapt over months; some never do. If your training performance is the thing you care about, this is the honest trade-off nobody selling keto mentions.
Anyone who loves bread and is hoping to hate it. Anyone whose training is intense and glycogen-dependent. Anyone with a history of restrictive eating patterns, since another category of forbidden food rarely helps. And anyone who's been told keto is the only way to lose fat — that's marketing, not physiology.
Applying this around a real schedule is where most plans break. Coaching exists for exactly that gap.
Sodium, potassium and magnesium go first and cause most of the misery attributed to the diet. Fiber usually collapses when grains and fruit leave; low-carb fiber sources and a psyllium or greens blend such as Dolce Superfoods prevent the digestive problems that make people quit. And protein stays high — keto is not a license for a fat-only diet.
Not inherently. It's better for people who find carbohydrate restriction easier than tracking. It's worse for people who don't.
Glycogen and its bound water returning. It isn't fat, and it happens within days.
It's possible but generally harder, since training intensity and glycogen availability are linked.
