Is BPC-157 Legal? Regulatory Status and What the Research Shows

Legal status in the United States

BPC-157 is not an FDA-approved drug. It has never been approved for any medical use in humans in the US, which means it cannot be lawfully sold or marketed for human consumption. In 2023 the FDA placed BPC-157 in Category 2 of its bulk drug substances list — substances the agency identified as raising significant safety risks for use in compounding. That designation effectively bars licensed compounding pharmacies from preparing it. Products sold online are typically labeled 'for research use only,' a label that exists specifically because sale for human use would be unlawful.

Anti-doping status

Athletes subject to testing should note that BPC-157 is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency Code. It falls under the S0 category covering substances with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. Prohibition applies at all times, in and out of competition.

What the research actually shows

Most published BPC-157 work is preclinical — rodent studies examining tendon, ligament, muscle and gastrointestinal healing, largely from a small number of research groups. Those animal results have been reported as favorable, which is why the compound has a following. The critical gap: there are essentially no published, peer-reviewed, controlled human trials establishing efficacy or long-term safety. Promising rodent data is a normal early stage of drug development, and the large majority of compounds at that stage never demonstrate the same effect in humans.

What is genuinely unknown

Because human trials are absent, the honest answer on long-term safety is that nobody knows. Unstudied questions include effects on tumor growth given angiogenic activity, interactions with medications, and consequences of extended use. Product quality is a separate issue: research-labeled products are not manufactured under pharmaceutical quality controls, and independent testing of gray-market peptides has repeatedly found inaccurate concentrations and contaminants.
