Band Triceps Pushdown
Upper arms frozen. The band pushdown works the triceps with the tension peaking at lockout, where a cable stack is usually easiest. Extend the elbows until the arms are straight and let the upper arms stay welded to the ribs. Elbows that drift forward turn it into a press, and high reps here cost the joints almost nothing.
Setup
- Anchor the band high, grip it with both hands, elbows at the sides.
- Stand tall, slight forward lean.
How To Do It
- Extend the elbows until the arms are straight.
- Squeeze the triceps hard at the bottom.
- Return to ninety degrees without letting the elbows lift.
Breathing
Exhale as you extend.
Common Mistakes
- Letting the elbows travel forward and away from the ribs.
- Using the shoulders to drive the movement.
Programming It
Three sets of 15-25.
Why This Exercise Works
Bands and triceps get along. The triceps is strongest at lockout and a band is heaviest at lockout, so the resistance curve lines up with the strength curve almost exactly. High reps here are well tolerated because the elbow is under very little load at the stretched position.
Where You Should Feel It
A hard squeeze in the triceps at lockout, with almost no load in the stretched position. Bands and triceps suit each other: the resistance peaks exactly where the muscle is strongest. Elbow pain means you are letting them drift forward.
Where It Fits in a Program
A pushdown without a cable stack, and the tension peaks exactly at lockout. Put it late. Nothing here needs you fresh, and the reps are cheap to recover from.
Progressing and Regressing It
To progress the band triceps pushdown: step further from the anchor, or squeeze the lockout for a beat. To regress it: step closer to the anchor and reduce the tension.
Who It's For
Anyone who wants arm volume without joint cost. High reps are well tolerated here, so it works as a finisher several times a week.
Equipment and Substitutions
The version shown uses a resistance band. No band? A cable stack does the same job with a flatter resistance curve: easier at the end range, harder at the start.

Common Questions
What muscles does the band triceps pushdown work?
The band triceps pushdown primarily trains the triceps.
How many sets and reps should I do?
Three sets of 15-25.
What are the most common band triceps pushdown mistakes?
Most often: letting the elbows travel forward and away from the ribs; using the shoulders to drive the movement.
Do I need a resistance band to do this?
This version uses a resistance band, and it trains the triceps. No band? A cable stack does the same job with a flatter resistance curve: easier at the end range, harder at the start.
Is this safe if I have an existing injury?
The band triceps pushdown puts the shoulder and elbow under load through a range many people have lost, so a cranky shoulder usually objects here before anything else does. Pain that pinches at a specific point is worth assessing; ordinary training discomfort is not. Not medical advice.
