Cable Lateral Raise
The lateral raise with tension everywhere — cables load the delt even at the bottom, where dumbbells sleep.
Setup
- Low pulley at your side, handle in the FAR hand, lean slightly away.
How To Do It
- Raise the arm out to shoulder height, elbow soft.
- Lead with the elbow, pinkie slightly up.
- Lower three slow seconds — the cable fights you the whole way.
Breathing
Exhale raising.
Common Mistakes
- Shrugging into it — shoulder stays down, delt does the lifting.
- Standing square — the slight lean-away is the secret.
Programming It
Three sets of 12-20 per side.
Why This Exercise Works
The cable pulls from below and behind, so the side delt is loaded even at the bottom of the rep, where a dumbbell has almost no resistance at all. That changes the exercise from a top-half movement to a full-range one.
Where You Should Feel It
The side of the shoulder, with tension from the very first inch rather than only at the top. Traps taking over is the usual fault, and it means the weight is too heavy.
Where It Fits in a Program
The lateral raise with tension everywhere — cables load the delt even at the bottom, where dumbbells sleep. Accessory work. It follows the compounds rather than competing with them.
Progressing and Regressing It
To progress the cable lateral raise: add a small increment; side delts respond to reps more than load. To regress it: reduce the load until the traps stop shrugging.
Who It's For
Anyone chasing shoulder width who has found dumbbells unsatisfying at the bottom of the range. The cable fixes exactly that problem.
Equipment and Substitutions
What you need for this one: a cable machine. Substitute a band at the same anchor height, or take a free-weight version from the list below and accept losing the tension at the end range.

Common Questions
What muscles does the cable lateral raise work?
The cable lateral raise primarily trains the side delts.
How many sets and reps should I do?
Three sets of 12-20 per side.
What are the most common cable lateral raise mistakes?
Most often: shrugging into it; standing square.
Do I need a cable machine to do this?
This version uses a cable machine, and it trains the side delts. A band gets you most of the way here. The resistance curve differs, but the line of pull — which is the point — is the same.
Is this safe if I have an existing injury?
The cable lateral raise puts the shoulder and elbow under load through a range many people have lost, so a cranky shoulder usually objects here before anything else does. Pain that pinches at a specific point is worth assessing; ordinary training discomfort is not. Not medical advice.
