Tempo Push-Up
Three down, pause, drive. The tempo push-up keeps the movement identical and multiplies the time the muscle spends under load, which is the cheapest progression available with no equipment. Lower for a full three-second count. Counting fast is the fault, and it is the honest answer when push-ups have simply become easy.
Setup
- Hands under the shoulders, body in a straight line from head to heels.
- Ribs down, glutes on.
How To Do It
- Lower for a full three-second count.
- Pause an inch off the floor without relaxing.
- Push back up at normal speed and repeat.
Breathing
Inhale through the three-second lower, exhale on the push.
Common Mistakes
- Counting fast. Three seconds is three seconds.
- Letting the hips sag as the set gets hard.
Programming It
Three sets of 6-12 with a three-second lower.
Why This Exercise Works
Slowing the lowering multiplies the time the chest spends under load without adding a single kilo. Three seconds down turns an easy set of fifteen into a hard set of eight, which is the cheapest progression available to anyone training at home.
Where You Should Feel It
The chest under tension for far longer than a normal push-up, with the burn arriving several reps earlier. Three seconds down turns an easy fifteen into a hard eight.
Where It Fits in a Program
Same movement, three times the time under tension, none of the equipment. Everything else in the session should be arranged around this one.
Progressing and Regressing It
To progress the tempo push-up: lengthen the tempo, or elevate the feet. To regress it: shorten the tempo to two seconds, or press from a bench.
Who It's For
Anyone training at home who has run out of ways to make push-ups harder. It is the cheapest progression available: no equipment, no extra reps.
Equipment and Substitutions
This needs no kit at all, which makes it the one that survives travel, busy gyms and bad weeks.

Common Questions
What muscles does the tempo push-up work?
The tempo push-up primarily trains the chest, triceps, core.
How many sets and reps should I do?
Three sets of 6-12 with a three-second lower.
What are the most common tempo push-up mistakes?
Most often: counting fast; letting the hips sag as the set gets hard.
Can I do this without any equipment?
Yes. This version needs no equipment at all. It trains the chest, triceps, core using bodyweight alone, which is why it travels well and works as a warm-up, a substitute, or a full session on its own.
Is this safe if I have an existing injury?
The tempo push-up puts the shoulder and elbow under load through a range many people have lost, so a cranky shoulder usually objects here before anything else does. Pain that pinches at a specific point is worth assessing; ordinary training discomfort is not. Not medical advice.
