Small group training vs group fitness classes vs 1-on-1

Small group training sits between a class and 1-on-1. A class gives you energy and one workout for everyone. 1-on-1 gives you every rep watched at $68 a session. A small group of three or four gives you your own program and a coach who rotates, at $28 a person. Which one fits depends on how new the lifts are and what gets you out of the door.

Part of small group training in Morton Grove, $28 a person at my garage gym. Prices and booking, or call or text (847) 387-0244.

A class gives you what, exactly?

A room full of people, a timer, music and one workout that everybody does. That is worth a lot for some people; the energy is real, and turning up to a fixed time is half of training. What a class cannot give you is a program written for your knee, your schedule and your equipment at home. The workout of the day does not know you.

It also cannot progress you. Load goes up in a class when you decide it does, and most people decide it does not. Nobody wrote down what you lifted last Tuesday. Nobody is going to.

So a class is worth it for the room and the clock. Go, if that is what gets you out of the house. Just do not expect it to be coaching, and do not expect the knee that hurt in March to be in anyone's notes by June, because there are no notes.

And 1-on-1 gives you what?

Every rep watched by the person who wrote the plan. For a beginner learning the barbell, or someone coming back from an injury a doctor has cleared, this is the fastest and safest first block. At my garage in Morton Grove it is $68 a session, and the in-person personal training page has the packs.

Where does a small group sit?

Three or four people, each on their own program, one coach moving between them. You get most of the individual attention at less than half the price, plus the pull of training beside people who expect you. Your numbers are written down. Load goes up when the plan says so, not when you feel brave. It is the right format once you can get through a set safely on your own. The small group training page explains how groups form.

Which costs what?

Small group is $28 a person a session, or $298 a person for a 12-pack. 1-on-1 is $68, $248 for four, $698 for twelve. A class price I will not quote, because studios set their own and they change. The full working is in how much small group training costs.

Which one should you pick?

New to the lifts, or working around an injury: 1-on-1 first. Move well already and want people around you: a small group. Want energy and do not mind one workout for everyone: a class, and there are good ones. Simple as that. If you are unsure, the questions in how to choose a small group training program settle it quickly. Then the application or the interest form on the in-person page is the way in.

Common questions

Can I do a small group and a class at the same gym?

You can do a class anywhere you like. Your program from me will account for it; tell me on the intake what else you do in the week.

Is a small group less safe than 1-on-1?

It is less watched, which is why it suits people who already move well. Beginners start in 1-on-1 for a block, then join a group.

Do groups run in winter?

No. The garage runs spring through fall. Each person's program moves to online coaching for the winter and the group can pick up again in spring.
