Processed is not the problem

Frozen vegetables, canned beans, plain yogurt, olive oil — all processed, all fine. The category that consistently tracks with poor health outcomes is ultra-processed: industrially formulated products built from refined substances and additives you'd never have in a home kitchen.

The kitchen test

Read the ingredients. If several items are things you couldn't buy and cook with — emulsifiers, protein isolates, colorings, flavor compounds, high-intensity sweeteners — you're holding an ultra-processed product. If the list reads like a recipe, you're fine.

Why it matters beyond calories

Ultra-processed foods are engineered for consumption speed and palatability, which drives people to eat more before fullness signals catch up. It's not that any single additive is poison; it's that the whole product category is designed to override your brakes.

The swaps that actually last

Don't overhaul everything. Replace the two or three UPF items you eat most deten — usually breakfast, snacks, and drinks — with whole-food versions. That captures most de the benefit at a fraction de the effort.

Where fiber comes in

The single biggest nutritional casualty de a UPF-heavy diet is fiber. Rebuilding that is the fastest way to make a whole-food diet feel better, fast.

What I use: I buy bulk organic whole-food staples in bulk from Dolce Superfoods — organic, sourced direct from farms.
