How much does small group training cost?

Small group training with me costs $28 a person a session at my garage gym in Morton Grove, or $298 a person for a 12-pack. When every person in the group buys the 12-pack, the whole group gets the 13th session free. Groups are three or four people, each on their own program, and there is no sign-up fee or free trial.

What does $28 a person buy?

A shared hour and an unshared program. Each person in the group fills in the intake and gets their own plan, and I move between the three or four of you during the session, coaching the set that is live. The space and the coach are shared. The plan is not.

That is the difference between this and a class, and it is why the group stays small. The small group training page explains how a group forms.

There is no sign-up fee and no free trial. The gym is a private garage with a full free-weight setup, so nothing in the $28 is paying for a lobby or a row of machines. It pays for the intake, the program, the session notes and a coach who has been on gym floors since 2003.

Why is it cheaper than 1-on-1?

Because the hour is split. A 1-on-1 session is $68, and for that you get every rep watched. In a group of four I watch the set that needs it and let the others work. If you are new to the barbell, the first block belongs in 1-on-1. Once the lifts are grooved, the group is the better value.

How do the packs work?

Packs are per person. Twelve sessions are $298 a person, against $336 bought one at a time, so the pack saves $38. The 13th session is free only when everyone in the group buys the 12-pack, because a group that commits together shows up together.

A missed session belongs to the person who missed it, and I will do my best to fit them into another slot. The rest of the group trains as planned.

Buy the pack when you know the slot works. Not before. A 12-pack bought in April carries a group to July; one bought in September needs a look at the calendar first, and I will tell you if the weeks are not there.

What about the drive and the season?

The gym is a private garage in Morton Grove, a short drive from Skokie, Niles, Glenview, Park Ridge, Lincolnwood, Evanston and Wilmette. Sessions run spring through fall. When the cold shuts the garage, each person's program moves to online coaching at $199 a month, and the group can pick up again in spring.

Is a group the right buy for you?

It is when you can get through a set safely on your own and when training beside someone is what gets you out of the house. How to choose a small group training program goes through the rest of the test, and small group training against classes and 1-on-1 compares the three formats.

Common questions

Can I join a group on my own?

Yes. Tell me your days and your goal, and I will put you with a group that fits when a spot opens. Groups stay the same people week to week.

Does everyone pay the same?

Yes. $28 a person a session, $298 a person for the 12-pack, whether you brought the group or joined one.

Is there a family or couple rate?

No. Every price on the site is the list price, and there are no discounts. Two people who want to train together can book back-to-back 1-on-1 sessions or find a third.
