How far west is it from Evanston?
Fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on the lights. Dempster Street is the straight line: it leaves Evanston, crosses Skokie and puts you a few blocks from the garage without a single turn worth mentioning.
From the north end, Golf Road or Emerson across to Skokie Boulevard works out about the same. Nobody pays for parking at this end; the street and the driveway are free and empty.
The address is not on the page because the gym is my home rather than a storefront. It reaches you in the booking confirmation with directions and a note on where to leave the car.
What does it cost, and how does it compare?
One on one is $68 a session, $248 for four and $698 for twelve, and the twelve pack carries a free thirteenth session. A small group of three or four costs $28 a person, or $298 a person across twelve.
Evanston is not short of places to pay for exercise, and plenty of them will happily sell you a package of classes. This is the other thing: one coach, one program written for you, and every rep of the main lift watched by the person who wrote it.
If the drive or the season does not work, the same coaching runs online at $149 once or $199 a month from the coaching page.
Who in Evanston does this suit?
It suits the person who has already tried the class model and found that nobody in the room was looking at them. A studio can be excellent and still not be able to tell you why your left hip shuts down at the bottom of a squat.
It suits people whose work is mostly thinking: hospital staff, university staff, anyone whose body has been sitting still and holding tension since Monday morning. And it suits somebody strong who has stopped getting stronger and cannot see why.
It does not suit anyone under eighteen, anyone after a fast result, or anyone training against medical advice. Whatever a doctor has said belongs on the form, and the program is built around it rather than in spite of it.
What is a session actually like?
Quiet. Two minutes on how the body feels, a warm-up aimed at what is coming, then the main lift coached set by set with one correction at a time. Nobody is counting down at you from a screen.
Accessories come next, chosen for the thing that is actually holding you back. Everything gets written down and goes into your program, so the following session begins where this one ended rather than starting again.
In a small group, three or four people work through their own programs in the same room while I move between them. It is closer to a training hall than a class, and the difference matters more than the price does.
What about the winter, and what about the drive in bad weather?
The garage is not insulated for a Chicago January, so in-person sessions run roughly spring through fall and pause once the cold sets in. That also solves the drive: the months where Dempster is worth avoiding are the months the garage is shut anyway.
Online coaching covers the winter at $199 a month, or $149 for a one-time custom plan. You keep the same coach, the same intake and the same numbers, so the spring restart is a continuation rather than a fresh beginning.
Late-season twelve packs get sized to the weeks left. Ask first and I will tell you honestly whether it is worth buying now or in March.
How do you book from Evanston?
Use the form below. Your goal, the days that work, anything I should train around. The reply lands within two days with the address and the slots that are open.
A text to (847) 387-0244 is fine too. The Morton Grove in-person page holds the long version of the offer, and the coaching application is the online door if that suits your year better.
Along the same road: Skokie sits between us, and Wilmette is up the shore.
Questions from Evanston
Do I need a car?
Practically, yes. The garage is in a residential part of Morton Grove and the drive is the sensible way to arrive. If getting here is the problem, online coaching does the same work from wherever you already train.
I have never lifted a barbell. Is that a problem?
It is the opposite of a problem. Starting with nobody's bad habits to undo is the easiest version of this work, and the first sessions are spent on how to squat, hinge and press rather than on how much.
How is this different from a small group class?
In a class everyone does the same session. Here, three or four people at $28 each are doing three or four different programs in the same room, and the coach moves between them. You share the space, not the plan.
Can I switch to online part way through a pack?
Yes. Unused sessions wait for you, or they move across to online coaching if that suits the month better. Say what has changed, on the form or on (847) 387-0244, and we will work it out without a phone tree.
Is any of this medical advice?
No. It is fitness guidance from a strength coach. Anything that hurts and keeps hurting belongs with a professional, and the program gets written around what they tell you.
